• Why did AI take off in 2022?

  The recipe is from 1986. Three things arrived together: the whole internet as training data, graphics chips that do the arithmetic ten thousand times faster, and the 2017 transformer design. Take any one away and it stalls.

  Data centres used about 415 terawatt hours in 2024, about 1.5 percent of the world's electricity, and the IEA expects that to more than double by 2030.
